New Brunswick

SEO for Canada’s only officially bilingual province.

New Brunswick is Canada’s only officially bilingual province, and that changes SEO. A Moncton business may need to rank in English and in French, for customers who search differently in each language. Getting the setup wrong means duplicate content, the wrong language in search results, or a whole audience that never finds the client. RankMeTech helps New Brunswick agencies get bilingual sites technically right, and delivers SEO and GEO under their own brand.

The bilingual SEO checklist

What a bilingual site needs to rank in both languages.

Most bilingual sites we see make at least one of these mistakes. Each one can quietly hide a version of the site from the people searching in that language.

  • Separate URLs for each language, not one page with a toggle
  • Correct hreflang tags linking the English and French versions
  • Search terms researched in each language, because direct translation misses how people actually search
  • Localized titles, headings and schema for each version
  • Business details consistent in both languages wherever they appear
  • Internal links that keep users in their language

Where we help

The technical side of bilingual SEO.

Your agency or your client handles translation and French copy. We make sure search engines can find, understand and serve the right version.

Missing or broken hreflangGoogle shows the wrong language versionAudit and fix hreflang across templates
Language toggle on one URLOnly one version gets indexedPlan a separate-URL structure with your developer

Three cities, three search markets

Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton.

Moncton

A transport and logistics hub with a strongly bilingual population. Clients often need both languages from day one.

Saint John

A port city with energy, industrial and trades businesses: B2B and industrial search alongside local service demand.

Fredericton

The provincial capital, with government, the University of New Brunswick and a tech and cybersecurity sector. Expect technical B2B buyers.

French-language AI search

AI tools answer in the language they’re asked.

A francophone customer asking for “meilleur comptable à Moncton” gets a French answer, drawn from French-language sources. If a client has no strong French content, it’s invisible to that question. For bilingual clients, AI visibility is worth checking in both languages. Tell us when a client serves francophone customers, and we’ll factor it into the GEO audit.

Bilingual site structures

Three ways to organize English and French.

All three can work with the right hreflang setup. The best choice depends on the client’s site and resources.

StructureExampleGood forWatch out for
Subfoldersexample.ca/fr/Most small and mid-size businesses; one domain builds authority for bothMenus and links that mix languages
Subdomainsfr.example.caSites run on separate systems per languageAuthority split between two hosts
Separate domainsexample.ca and exemple.caStrongly distinct brand names in each languageDouble the technical upkeep

A Moncton example

One clinic, two audiences.

A hypothetical physiotherapy clinic in Moncton serves English and French patients. Its English pages rank well, but French searchers keep landing on English pages, and the French pages barely appear. The usual causes:

  • French pages missing from the sitemap
  • No hreflang tags, so Google can’t pair the versions
  • French titles and meta descriptions left in English
  • Schema describing services in English only

Glossary

Key terms on this page.

Hreflang
An HTML signal that pairs language versions of a page, so each searcher gets the right one.
Subfolder
A language section on the same domain, such as example.ca/fr/.
Localized metadata
Titles and descriptions written in the page’s own language, not left in English.
Canonical tag
A signal telling search engines which URL is the main version of a page.
Entity
A distinct thing search engines can identify, such as a business, a person or a place.
GEO
Generative Engine Optimization: helping a business get mentioned in AI answers, in either language.

FAQ

New Brunswick questions

In one sentenceRankMeTech helps New Brunswick agencies get bilingual sites technically right (separate URLs, hreflang, localized metadata and schema) and delivers SEO and GEO under the agency’s brand.

Do you help with bilingual SEO?

Yes. We audit and fix the technical side of bilingual sites, including separate URLs, hreflang tags, localized metadata and schema for each language.

Why not just translate the English pages?

People search differently in each language, so a direct translation often misses the terms francophone customers actually use.

Do you write French content?

Translation and French copy are handled by your agency or your client. We focus on making sure search engines find, understand and serve the right language version.

Which New Brunswick cities do you cover?

We work with agencies serving clients across the province, including Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton.

What is hreflang?

An HTML signal that tells search engines which pages are language versions of each other, so English searchers get the English page and French searchers get the French one.

Should a bilingual site use subfolders or separate domains?

Subfolders, such as example.ca/fr/, suit most small and mid-size businesses because one domain builds authority for both languages. Separate domains can make sense for strongly distinct brand names.

Why do French searchers land on English pages?

Usually because hreflang is missing, French pages aren’t in the sitemap, or French metadata was left in English. A technical audit finds the cause.

Do you contact our clients?

No. We work behind the scenes and never contact your clients.

Do you help Saint John industrial businesses?

Yes, through their agencies, with technical B2B content briefs and Organization, Service and Person schema for industrial buyers.
