Build vs buy
Hire an SEO specialist, or partner with a white-label team? The Halifax maths.
Every growing agency reaches the same point: clients want SEO, and someone has to do it. The instinct is to hire. Sometimes that’s right. Often it’s the most expensive way to find out whether SEO is a real line of business for you. This page puts real Halifax numbers on the decision, so you can choose with a spreadsheet rather than a hunch.
The cost stack
What one in-house hire really costs.
What sits on top of salary
- Employer CPP and EI contributions
- Vacation pay and statutory holidays
- Benefits, if you offer them
- SEO tool subscriptions (crawlers, rank trackers, backlink databases), usually needed per seat
- Laptop, software and training
- Management time, because someone has to review the work before clients see it
- Recruiting time and, if the hire doesn’t work out, doing it all again
What it adds up toFor most agencies, the real annual cost of one specialist lands well above the salary line. The Job Bank median works out to roughly $70,000 a year full-time before any of the items on the left, and you pay all of it from the first day.
The ramp-up nobody budgets for
A new hire doesn’t produce client-ready work in week one.
Meanwhile, the clients who asked for SEO are already paying. A white-label partner starts the week you sign, with a free audit on your first client.
Weeks 1–4
Onboarding, tool setup, learning your clients and your processes.
Months 2–3
First audits and fixes, with heavy review from you.
Month 4 onward
Independent work, if the hire is strong.
White-label
A free audit on your first client, then delivery from the week you sign.
Capacity maths
When one person is too many, or too few.
A single specialist handles a limited number of retainers well. That creates two traps:
- Too few clients: you pay a full salary for part-time work, and your SEO margin is negative until the book fills up.
- Too many clients: quality slips, deadlines slide, and your second hire costs the same as the first.
With white-label, cost scales per client
Add a client and your cost goes up by one flat rate. Lose a client and it goes down. The interactive calculator on our wholesale pricing page models your margin at 1 to 40 clients, in-house versus wholesale, using your own client count.

What happens when things change.
| Risk | In-house hire | White-label (RankMeTech) |
|---|---|---|
| Client churn | Payroll stays fixed | Cost drops with the client |
| Hire leaves | Knowledge walks out; you rehire | Team and process continue |
| Skills gap (GEO, schema, AI search) | Training needed | Included |
| Quality control | You review everything | A person reviews every deliverable before it reaches you |
| Time to first deliverable | Months | The week you sign |
| White-label reporting | You build it | Included under your brand |
The hybrid model
Where most agencies end up
It isn’t either/or. Many agencies keep an account manager or SEO strategist in-house, someone who owns the client relationship and sells the work, and send delivery to a white-label partner. You keep:
- The client relationship and the strategy conversations
- Control of pricing and positioning
- A lean payroll that doesn’t swing with client churn
When hiring is right
Be honest with yourself
Hire if:
- You have a large, stable book of SEO clients, enough to keep a specialist fully busy for years
- SEO is your agency’s core identity, not an add-on
- You have senior SEO leadership in-house to train and review a hire
If that’s you, hire. Even then, a white-label partner is a useful overflow valve when you’re between hires or ahead of capacity.

FAQ
Build vs buy questions
The bottom lineHire when you have a large, stable SEO book and senior leadership to manage it. Until then, white-label turns a fixed salary into a per-client cost that rises and falls with your client list.
How much does an SEO specialist earn in Halifax?
Robert Half lists about $51,659 to $73,398 a year for a Halifax SEO specialist. Job Bank reports a Halifax Region median of $33.67 an hour, last updated November 2023.
Is white-label SEO cheaper than hiring?
It depends on your client count. With few SEO clients, white-label usually costs far less because you pay per client, not a full salary. With a large, stable book, a hire can make sense.
Can I keep strategy in-house and outsource delivery?
Yes. Many agencies keep an SEO strategist or account manager in-house and use a white-label partner for audits, content, technical fixes and GEO.
How many SEO clients does an agency need before hiring a specialist?
Enough to keep the person fully busy with a stable book for the long term, after allowing for ramp-up time and review. Model it with your own numbers; our wholesale pricing calculator compares in-house and wholesale margins at 1 to 40 clients.
What should I ask before hiring an SEO specialist?
Who will review their work, which tools they need per seat, how they’ll learn GEO and AI search, how many retainers they can handle well, and what happens to your clients if they leave.
How fast can a white-label partner start?
RankMeTech starts with a free GEO audit on one client site. Ongoing work begins once flat per-client rates are agreed, with no long-term contract.
